Safer Space Policy

This policy applies to Bookfair 2020 and all associated spaces whether physical or online. We thank the Edinburgh Bookfair Collective for the original text which we have based ours upon.

In order to create an environment to foster free discussion and sharing of ideas, those engaging in abusive or oppressive behaviour will be asked to leave the space.

We encourage all attendees to be aware of this policy, and to take autonomous action if they observe people engaging in abusive or oppressive behaviour.

Volunteers will also be on hand to help enact this as needed.

We define the following as abusive behaviours which are not tolerated in this space:

Physical abuse

  • Violence and threat of violence (unless in self defence)
  • Use of force and threat of force (unless minimal to protect users of the space and the space itself)
  • Rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment

Verbal abuse

  • Personal insult (insults or aggression towards an individual)
  • Oppressive language (insults or generalisations about a group of people)
  • Verbal Harassment, sexual or otherwise (repeated uninvited personal comments or requests)
  • Verbal abuse in writing (all of the above in written form)

Regarding Transphobia

We would like to reiterate that the Bookfair 2020 will be a zero-tolerance zone for expressions of transphobia.

The organisers stand in absolute solidarity with all trans people, especially the trans women and trans feminine people most targeted.

There is no place for transphobia in our feminism and in the class struggle.

We will not allow transphobic literature of any kind to be disseminated inside the bookfair, and we will not hesitate to remove individuals or groups that breach our policy.

Respect the pronouns and names of those around you. We recognise that mistakes will happen but any deliberate misgendering or dead naming will not be accepted.

If prior to Bookfair you have any concerns or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.

Your safety and inclusion are our priority.

On the day itself we will have a number of volunteers throughout the building who will be happy to act on any concerns you have.

We would ask that photography inside and outside the venue be kept to a minimum. If you wish to take a picture of your stall, a banner or friend make sure to request the permission of everyone involved. If you are asked to delete a photo, regardless of reason, please respect their wishes.

We want our event to be as inclusive as possible, so we have chosen a venue with good physical access throughout and have tried to plan the event with accessibility in mind.

If you have any questions, or would like to suggest any further accessibility measures, please e-mail us at

If you need assistance on the day of the Bookfair, please ask one of our volunteers.
There will be a staffed welcome desk in the foyer and event volunteers wearing purple “staff” badges will be stationed throughout the building.
